Happy Friday!
We here at Soundfly HQ spend an inordinate amount of time on the internet reading and listening and generally consuming far too much music media. And it’s awesome! So we wanted to start sharing our weeks with you. Presenting Off Notes: a weekly round-up of all the musical goodies the rest of the internet has to offer. Were you really going to get that much done on a Friday afternoon anyway? Without further ado…
What we’ve been reading
- Lindsay Zoladz’s review of the new Sleater-Kinney album is my favorite piece of music writing (or blog writing, or writing writing) I’ve read in a year. Her knowledge and love of the band is infectious. Killed it. [Vulture]
- Music AND museums?! The Met is going to be full of jazz bands providing a real-life soundtrack to your visit next Friday! We’re in. [The Metropolitan Museum of Art]
- Here’s some glass-half-full news for anyone bemoaning the sad state of Brooklyn music venues. [Brooklyn Based]
- Did you miss our interview with beatboxer, poet, singer, artist, hearthrob, person we want to be when we grow up, Chesney Snow? We’re still swooning.
- Not music-related: We only just discovered that Chrome has a hidden dinosaur-jumping-over-cactuses game built into the error screen. I’ve never been so excited for our internet to go down. [Mashable]
- Have you seen this video about how all the popular country songs right now are the same? It. Will. Blow. Your. Mind. [Youtube]
- We were stoked to find out that Boston-based Groupmuse, who throw classical music concerts in intimate venues, are coming to New York! Can’t wait to sit in a stranger’s living room with them next month!
- Our friends (and one of the many stars of our forthcoming “How to Book a Tour on a Shoestring” course), Great Caesar, are playing a show at Mercury Lounge in NYC on Monday. Who’s coming with us? [Facebook]
- Looking for something to do next Wednesday night? Come to our EPIC, AMAZING, SPECTACULAR ONE-NIGHT MUSIC FESTIVAL!
What we’ve been listening to
Here are some of our favorite tunes for your weekend:
- Sleater-Kinney is streaming all of No Cities to Love free on YouTube.
- Jeremy has been all about experimental musician Matana Roberts’ new album, also streaming online! [Guardian]
- I have such a soft spot for The Decemberists. And their new video features Nick Offerman, everyone’s ideal Friday afternoon companion. [Youtube]
- I think I’ve listened to Kim Mayo’s entire library of music this week. Her aquecuts video is so rad, and she made a beautiful song with Mahea’s band Lennox. [Alphabet Bands]
- Did you know Purple Rain celebrated it’s 30th birthday last year? And I did too? What does it mean?! Let’s go crazy! [Spotify]
And as ever at Soundfly HQ, most of our time is still spent watching and re-watching the bizarre majesty that is Rob Cantor’s “Shia LaBeouf” Live. Ian did a ridiculous musical dissection of the song here. We even found a remarkably well-timed mashup of the song with the music video for Elastic Heart. But we’d really encourage you to spend the rest of your Friday basking in the endless glow of the original:
