We’re nearing the end of another year helping hundreds of you reach your musical goals. As has been our monthly experience for the last three years running, the music you make, your inspirations, and the goals you’ve set out to achieve are about as varied and diverse as anyone can imagine. This not only keeps us continually entertained and intrigued, but it challenges us to stay engaged, open, and informed as to what’s going on out there in the world of music.
I guess what I mean is: the Soundfly team learns just as much from you as we hope you’re learning from us.
We wanted to share some of the incredible work that was made in the last few months of 2019. From Jeffrey blowing us away with his arranging skills to Susan tackling Logic Pro X with gusto, we’re thrilled to highlight the work of Soundfly student-artists who made the biggest strides towards their goals.

“Torn Apart”
Student-Artist: Roman Tomanov (DJ Tomanov)
Course: Unlocking The Emotional Power of Chords
Mentor: Sırma Munyar
Goal focus: Roman had taken some production courses prior to this course, but that’s about all the knowledge he had about music. He was pretty much self taught, didn’t know a ton about music theory. He’s a quick learner though! He got about everything he could out of this course, so he has definitely reached his goal.
Sırma: Roman didn’t have much of a musical background when he started this course. He came to me as a producer who’s interested in making music in several different genres, but he felt that he didn’t have all the tools he needed. Because he started this course with that level of self-awareness, he was dedicated to learn as much as he could all the way through, but more than that, he was not shy to apply everything he learned during this experience to his compositions simultaneously. Considering how new he is to all this, I’m really impressed by the quality of his work and I can’t wait to hear more from him in the future.
“Tear It Down”
Student-Artist: Jeffrey Kearney (Tangle Theory)
Course: Headliners Club
Mentor: Andre Madatian
Goal focus: To improve songwriting chops and to be able to successfully and confidently arrange songs using sophisticated harmonic/melodic techniques.
Andre: Jeffrey is one of the most talented, hard working and passionate students I’ve had thus far in my time with Soundfly. His ability to arrange for various instruments in a short period of time is impressive. Jeffrey has a bright future as an arranger and composer!
“The Universe Is Calling”
Student-Artist: Kevin Hockaday
Course: Headliners Club
Mentor: Sulene van der Walt
Goal focus: To take his production skills to a new level.
Sulene: During our session, Kevin found depth and new vibes for his productions. I watched him discover new parts of his musicality, and that was super exciting.
“Untitled (S1)”
Student-Artist: Gary McDonough (GMcD)
Course: The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony
Mentor: Joseph Capalbo
Goal focus: Expand understanding and application of more advanced harmonies. Continue to expand and refine my production techniques with Logic Pro and MIDI. Accelerate creative momentum.
Joseph: Gary started applying the course concepts into his music right away. With the help of the course and personal mentorship, he drastically expanded his chord theory, melody writing, and overall production quality.
“I Don’t Know”
Student-Artist: Lisa Reshkus (Ella Miss)
Course: Headliners Club
Mentor: Andrea De Carlo
Goal focus: To learn how to use a compressor in mixing.
Andrea: Lisa is a great student. It was a real pleasure working with her. She has a tremendous amount of drive and creativity and I can’t wait to see what she continues to create!
“Messed Up”
Student-Artist: Susan Simonson
Course: Intro to Making Music in Logic Pro X
Mentor: Sırma Munyar
Goal focus: Susan is a songwriter who’s trying to break into the sync world, and her main goal here was to figure out how to make her own demos for the producers she collaborates with.
Sırma: Susan’s drive is truly inspiring. She was intimidated by Logic at first, having little to no experience making demos before, but she didn’t let her frustrations while learning this vast program get the better of her. It was really exciting to see her progress, week by week, as she fit her tasks into her schedule filled with co-write sessions and networking events. She has learned a ton, and she applied everything she learned throughout this process to her catalogue. This session was such a success!
“An Old Way”
Student-Artist: Javier Grau (the More, the More)
Course: Songwriting for Producers
Mentor: Sam Friedman
Goal focus: Javier wanted to better flex his writing muscles and get out of the box of only writing when inspired.
Sam: I love working with Javier — he is such a talented and creative artist. His work walks the line between introspective and outgoing. On one hand, his lyrics are pensive and thoughtful, and on the other, his instrumental and singing style is nothing but fun. I love how he uses dance music as a vessel to communicate deeper thoughts and feelings.
