If your New Year’s resolution has started to lose steam, we’ve got the perfect dose of inspiration for you. Our Student Spotlight series highlights some amazing music by Soundfly students — works in progress and finished pieces, alike — all showcasing our students’ determination to hone their musical abilities and improve on their unique artistic voices.

Each and every student enrolled in either one of our 6-week mentored courses or in a Headliner’s Club custom coaching session works alongside their mentor to set and achieve an ambitious musical goal. Whether that means developing and applying a deeper understanding of harmony to their music or getting their mixes to sound just right, each of these five students took the brave step to learn, create, and share.

Dig into the playlist below and learn a little more about each student and the mentors who helped them get to the next stage of their musical career.

“We Had a Beautiful Time”

Course: Headliners Club
Mentor: Sırma Munyar
Focus: Ambient vocal production with the goal of of incorporating vocals in a way that melts them into her compositions

Sırma: I was so excited to work with Lisa, from the beginning until the very end, because I love how her creative mind works. She’s not bound by any rule or method: She’s so open minded when it comes to combining her classical composition skills with her electronic music production skills. It’s not often that I get to see such clear proof of my input in my students’ works, but with Lisa, the results were immediate and spectacularly inspiring.

“Moonlight”

Student-Artist: Ben Harris
Course: Faders Up I: Modern Mix Techniques
Mentor: Jamie Billings
Focus: Making tracks that appeal to music libraries

Jamie: Ben grasped the basics and advanced techniques of mixing, and I was especially impressed with how well he grasped compression and routing. He was very communicative and stuck to schedule extremely well. I would recommend anyone work with Ben.

“6We4Feedback”

Course: The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony
Mentor: Joseph Capalbo
Focus: Writing and understanding hooks; and developing a deeper understanding of chords and how to apply them into his productions

“WHY”

Student-Artist: Caitlin Moss
Course: Headliners Club
Mentor: Sam Friedman
Focus: Leading with mixing, focus on Caitlin’s on-the-spot abilities as well as her wider creative skills as a composer

Sam: Caitlin is great. Her first assignment came out really well! She has a ton of natural talent and I’m so excited to hear more from her.
