Meet Your Mentors

Sırma Munyar

Sırma is a singer, songwriter, producer, and topliner who has recorded with the likes of Akon, Illenium, and Keri Hilson. She has recorded and produced vocals for jingles for major ads, and written and produced original tracks that hit the top of the Spotify charts in her native Turkey. She studied contemporary writing & production at Berklee College of Music, where she learned to become a self-sufficient, multifaceted musician. She also studied production and mixing at London School of Sound, and has worked at various studios on production and sound engineering.

One of Sırma’s early musical experiences involved placing 3rd at a professional jazz singing contest at 18, after which she was invited to represent Turkey in the World Choir for the 2010 World Cup song “Oh Africa.” For the recording session and the music video shoot, Sırma had to interrupt her first semester at Berklee for a week and fly to LA to work with Akon and Keri Hilson. Fresh out of high school and immediately faced with a packed schedule, she then understood the true meaning of being a professional musician today: always being prepared to seize any and every opportunity.

Sırma loves working with students at the intersection of songwriting and production, helping them figure out how to produce the sounds they hear in their heads using the software at their fingertips. In particular, she specializes in vocal production.

Sulene van der Walt

Hailing from South Africa, Sulene is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, producer, and composer who you’ve likely seen or heard before, whether you know it or not. You may have witnessed her blue hair lighting up late-night TV when she’s toured the world as Nate Ruess of fun.’s guitarist. You’ve probably heard her music scoring your favorite Showtime drama, Al Pacino movie, or Verizon commercial. You may even know her as the rocker chick avatar shredding on Rock Band VR.

Her self-produced artist project under the same name has been described as “blissful bedroom synth pop” which she creates in her adopted home of Brooklyn, New York. With St. Vincent-worthy guitar riffs that glide over pulsing ’80s drum beats, the indie-pop powerhouse has earned rave reviews from the likes of Billboard, Village Voice, and BuzzFeed. Sulene is a composer for multiple music houses including Marmoset and Squeak E Clean, she’s endorsed by Fender and Jim Dunlop, and her solo music is published through Rough Trade Publishing. Sulene has a degree in film scoring from Berklee College of Music.

Martin D. Fowler

Martin is a composer, producer, and bassist with his hands in a huge variety of musical projects. He’s produced music for acclaimed podcasts such as This American Life, Limetown, and The Spark, and written for various artists and production houses. He’s recorded and performed all over the world with acts such as VÉRITÉ, the PLS.trio, Arthur Moon, Emel Mathlouthi, and other NYC-based artists, and produces original electro and house music and remixes as MDFX, and trap/jungle/bass music and remixes as WNNR. He’s also written lots of the music featured in Soundfly videos!

One of Martin’s most memorable musical moments happened while working on the score to the indie film Experimenter, composed by Bryan Senti. During the recording session, Marty was asked to re-voice and notate a section that involved a lot of string harmonics — one of the toughest things to notate, given all the math of matching which note works with which harmonic and which finger hovers where. Marty dove in head first and got it done, despite biting his nails the entire time — and in the process learned not to be afraid to put it all on the line for the music.

Martin hopes to help all of his students tangibly further themselves as musicians, as well as meeting the goals of the course. He says the most important advice he ever got was to only speak when you have something to say — a lesson he applies to music.

Listen to more of Martin’s music here and here.
